Quote #1: “After spending an entire day in America, surrounded by Americans, I realized that my father’s description of America had been correct. The bathrooms were clean and the people were very, very kind.” -Firoozeh Dumas- Page 7
Significance: The quote that I chose relates to the question, “How do Americans treat the characters?” When the day ended at Firoozeh’s first day of school, her mother didn’t know how to get home. Some girl in Firoozeh’s class noticed that Firoozeh and her mom were lost so they helped them out by asking Firoozeh’s mom to call Kazem (Firoozeh’s dad). Since he spoke English, he (Kazem) told the mother of the girl the directions to Firoozeh’s house. The reason why Firoozeh said that Americans are so kind is because the girl in Firoozeh’s class and her mom helped Firoozeh and Nazireh (Firoozeh’s mom) to their house. She also likes how America is so clean and nice.
Character Judgment: I think that Firoozeh is a very bright girl and she is thankful for having the chance to come to America. I’m glad that she is motivated to learn and have the opportunity to be somebody one day. Her actions towards her mom are very strange because she respects her but she can’t make up her mind whether she wants her mom to learn English or not. I think that Firoozeh is very clever and she seems like she knows the answer to everything.
Question: Are your thoughts about America the same as Firoozeh’s?
Significance: The quote that I chose relates to the question, “What was the life/role of the characters in their home country?” Firoozeh and her family’s tradition/culture are different than people in America. When Iranians eat, they have seasons. So when it’s winter, they eat celery or rhubarb stew, cilantro, parsley, fenugreek, sweet lemon, and aromatic citrus. Each season represents different foods. They usually make food from scratch but here in America we buy food from Supermarkets but we don’t make it from scratch. We only cook food if it’s necessary.
Personal Connection: I can relate to this quote because my family is from Eritrea and we have some cultural food too. We celebrate some traditions today. Firoozeh are alike in some ways but different as well. I think that as I read more depth into this book, then I will learn a lot about her traditions and culture.
Question: What do you find interesting about this quote? Why or why not?

Quote 1: I think that this quote is very good. I also agree with quote to because when I came to school in Mexico they were very nice to me. I also think that this quote also make firoozeh look good in her part to because she is being very nice by giving a compliment about the Americans.
1?: I agree with firoozeh because Americans are very nice. I remember that when I first came to school in America they were all treating me nice and especially the kids because they thought that the language I spoke sounded cool.
quote 2: I found your second quote very interesting. The reason why is because I never knew that they have different seasons and those different seasons represent a certain option of food they can eat in that season. I thought that was kind of cool because some people are most of the time like oh what should I eat there's nothing to eat but instead Iranians have it all organized because there all like oh well since its this season I could eat so and so.
2?: I find this quote interesting because I never knew that in the Iranian culture they have different seasons for food and here in America we could just eat what ever we feel like.
