Funny in Farsi: Post #5

Funny in Farsi

Quote #1: “As college approached, I stumbled upon a talent better than selling popcorn or polishing silver. I started writing scholarship essays. I wrote essay after essay about my life, and my dreams and my goals.” -Firoozeh -Page 129

Significance: This quote relates to the question, “What hardships do the characters endure as they make a new life?” I think that Firoozeh really cares about her education. She is motivated to keep trying to write essays so some college would accept her. Since she can't afford college intuition, she tried to work, but she still had difficulties. Firoozeh had to stop working at the movies and write scholarship essays. Firoozeh only wants to pursue her dreams.

Personal Connection: I can connect to this quote because I know a lot of students who are seniors and are still applying for college but while they are working they still can't pay enough for their college intuition. So now days people work extra or people get free scholarships if they do really well. Firoozeh reminds me of a lot of people that I know because they all really care about their education and they work real hard in order to be successful. Some people don't even try when they have it easy unlike Firoozeh where she can't even get loans.

Question: Is College so important to you, that you would write essays to try to get in?

Quote #2: "Having grown up in California, I had always heard about the Big One, the inevitable huge earthquake that awaited all of us who chose to live in sunshine instead of reason."
-Firoozeh -Page 155

Significance: This quote relates to the question, "What hardships do the characters endure as they make a new life?” Firoozeh knew that the big earthquake was coming because it's San Francisco and she was warned about it too. Firoozeh is smart she would know what to do, so she grabbed some slippers and a pillow because there's nothing else she could've done. Firoozeh knew that her husband was out at work, and her parents were in Southern California, so she couldn't really call them at the time, because the phone line was dead. An earthquake is something that Firoozeh has to be aware of because she lives in California, and there are a lot of beaches, so she needs to evacuate as soon as possible or else she could be in danger.

Character Judgement: I'm glad that Firoozeh knew what to do, because she would've been in danger. I'm very proud of Firoozeh because she helped an old lady who lives on the 2nd floor of her apartment because she saw her shaking like she was about to have a heart attack. I feel that every other adult out there should make sure that they live in a nice area where not so many earthquakes occur, but also make sure that their kids are safe. I like her automatic reactions when she sees somebody in need. Firoozeh is a girl with a lot of heart and she respects people. I bet that lady really appreciates what Firoozeh did for her, because I know I would. I'm just happy that Firoozeh is safe.

Question: What would you do if you were in Firoozeh’s position?
