Journal #7 - Chapters 25-28 - Perspective: Helen Robinson

In middle October, something really big happened to me. I was Tom Robinson’s wife until he died. Tom used to work for a man named Mr. Link Deas. Now, Mr. Link Deas gave me a job because he felt sorry for me because I was raising 3 kids alone and I didn’t have a job to support them so he offered me a job. I was a cook at his job. Every time I used the public road the Ewell’s would harass me. They just always irked me. So in order to avoid them, I had to walk a mile to work. So when I got to work, Mr. Deas noticed that I took the long way to work and he took me back home past the Ewell’s because he didn’t want anyone messing with me. I thought that was so sweet. He was yelling at Mr. Ewell from outside but Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to listen or care. But I am so thankful for Mr. Deas taking me in because I went through so much and I needed to support my family and my own kids and I never had anyone’s help in my life. There were too many inconveniences that were going on then and I hated that Mr. Ewell was the worst one and known for it too.

One day Mr. Ewell was following me when I was going to Mr. Deas house and he wanted to do something to me for telling Mr. Deas. But when I got to Mr. Deas’ house, Mr. Deas protected me and put Mr. Ewell in check. He sort of threatened Mr. Ewell telling him that if he hears a complaint from me again he will have him locked up for good but Mr. Ewell was trying to say that he didn’t want to be with a nigger and he didn’t even touch me. But Mr. Deas said you always assault her and I will have you arrested for that. I was laughing at Mr. Ewell but not out loud because he wasn’t making sense. I already didn’t like Mr. Ewell for accusing my husband and I blamed him for Tom’s death too because if he was never accused then he would’ve never been in jail. Mr. Ewell was jobless and rude. He had issues. Nobody ever liked him and I know he was so abusive towards his daughter. From that point on, I was never harassed by Bob Ewell again!!

Next month, I was so excited to see what the Jem and Scout and other kids were going to be for Halloween. I was a little nervous when Jem and Scout were going to their school late out at night. I thought something might happen. Something scary did go down that night. Mr. Ewell and 3 other people were stalking Jem and Scout trying to kill them because Atticus humiliated him in court. But I was so scared when they told me this, but Scout was in her costume and it got muddy when Mr. Ewell tried to jump her and Jem. I just can’t believe how idiotic Mr. Ewell can be and how dumb he can get. I was just glad the kids were safe but it was obvious to me that Mr. Ewell and the 3 other people consented to what they did before they did it. When Atticus and Mr. Heck Tate found out and investigated they knew that they had to make an assessment to fix this issue. Poor Jem was persecuted by Dr. Raymond because his arm was broken when he was in the hands of Bob Ewell. He was also unconscious. They didn’t allegedly accuse Bob Ewell for jumping the kids until they saw him dead under the tree. Good thing that stranger brought them home safe and sound.
