Book Review of Homeless Bird

Book Review of Homeless Bird
By: Meseret Ghirmai
I read the book Homeless Bird by Gloria Whelan. It is an award winning book. I like this book a lot and I’ve never read anything like it. Throughout my book review I will talk about why I recommend this book, some of the things that I liked about this book, and why I chose this book to read. I hope you choose to read this book!
I would recommend this book to people that like romantic novels and are interested in the life of 13 year old girls in India. Another reason why I would recommend this book is because it’s very interesting and amazing and I loved how it was written and I could picture it actually going on in India. I also like this book because once you get in the middle of the book you won’t want to stop reading it. This book would probably go under the realistic fiction category because it’s romantic and dramatic. I loved a lot of the parts but then again some of it was boring. I’m glad I read this book because there were quite a lot of vocabulary words. I also learned some words that they speak in India. When you read this book be careful when you are reading the names of the characters because they don’t really use the names they use the Indian name for it so it sounds so similar to the other characters names. If you don’t pay attention to a little part of the book while you’re reading the rest of the book won’t make sense to you and you will be confused at the end because it has a great ending.
One of the quotes that I thought was amazing was when the main character Koly said, “The surprise was that they did not judge me by my age, but by my work.” I thought that was amazing because Koly is a hard worker and she is very kind. She sets a good example for younger students. She is motivated to having a good education and reading so well. Koly is a polite friend with a heart of an angel. She reminds me of some of my best friends. Another quote that struck me was when the old widow mother Maa Kamala said, “Here you are not a widow but a young woman with a life ahead of you.” This surprised me because I never met any lady who is a stranger to a young girl who doesn’t know her that much and she treats her like her own child. I thought that was very sweet because ever since her loss she has been a widow and I couldn’t imagine how cruel her mother in law was treating her. I think that no matter how mean your in laws are or any other person that takes care of you should respect you just as much as you respect them. I felt mostly strong about this quote because I want to see my friends and family succeed in school and have a great education so they don’t regret anything. A lot of the quotes in the book have meanings and some of them are expressions but are really powerful strong expressions.
I chose to read this book because when I read the summary it made me want to know what happens to Koly. When I was done I was happy because I didn’t just want to know the ending but what happens from start to end. It’s pretty cool how this is 4 to 5 years while she is struggling then finally is free and she is happy. She suffered 4 to 5 years with family problems then she changes during the years and becomes more mature. Koly is one smart girl who is very why on the other hand. She needs to be more social and open with other people because she is very talented and brilliant and has lots of ideas for things. I can’t think of another book I read that is very close to this book. As I was reading this book I was continuosly reading this book. On a scale from 1-10, 10 being the best, I would give it a 10 because I loved everything about it.
To conclude this book review, I just want to say that Homeless Bird is a wonderful book and it has many cute romantic expressions and quotes that you will love but you will also learn what the girls in India at the age of 13 have to deal with. It’s not right but the book is pretty interesting. Hope you enjoy it!
